Excited to learn how to use this retro calculator!
Saw this on eBay and couldn't resist a little bid. Anyway I won, and this turned up today.
Always did like logarithms...
Picked up an ASA E6-B flight computer circular #SlideRule at a yard sale. It's the same kind Spock uses on TOS, though his is aluminum; this one is paper. I have an aluminum one from another company, which I occasionally use to calculate my #ebike daily ride mileage when my GPS app fails. This one is more legible, and lighter weight.
@tomwsmf I laid out my #sliderule for the #boardgame Acquire with a #LibreOffice spreadsheet.

HackadayNew tool day. I count it as #SlideRule related.
This is an #Aristo 1100 Planimeter, a tool to measure areas from drawings or maps.
The QA sheet inside dates it to about April 1962.
Do I have any clue how it's supposed to work? Nope.
Do I have a manual? Also, nope.
What could possibly go wrong?
Oh. Not to forget: most ends have sharp needles and pointy ends. Totally safe for somebody like me.
The #SlideRule, like the #LogBook, is probably as useless as the #PocketCalculator, today. But I am obsessed with those relics, even in the face of modern 64-bit and 128-bit CPUs.
I hope, in a couple of decades when I'm six-feet-under, people still appreciate those CPUs as we do the slide rule.
Had bike computer app problems today; lost 11 minutes of the ride. I got to use my circular #SlideRule to calculate my mileage.
Today's calculation: I rode for 11 minutes before the GPS app glitched, so I re-set it and rode another 48 minutes for a total of 59 minutes. Set the one hour mark on the 10.4 miles, my average speed. Look back a couple ticks to the 59 minute mark on the inner scale, which is lined up w/ the 10.2 mile mark, giving me my distance.
This thing is still useful!
We're going to have to rebuild civilization, aren't we? Shit. Well, good thing I know how to use a #SlideRule.
Lo encontré en una tienda de segunda mano. Resulta difícil creer que la gente usara este aparato para hacer cálculos reales y hacer volar aviones. #regladecalculo #SlideRule #computoanalogico

We like mechanical calculators like slide rules, but…
HackadayThe 19th Century #engineers, our forebears, overbuilt their products, because the #mathematical techniques, though already fully mature and accurate, were not as precise, due to the use of the #SlideRule. In the second half of the 20th Century, my generation of engineers did their best to exploit the powers of #computing to lengthen MTBF and to extend product lives.
In the 21st Century, though, engineering seems to have become obsessed with the use of #AI and other advanced computing technologies to predict accurately and precisely when products will fail, so as to aid the actuaries set the #warranties that expire just before the products fail.
#Engineering is a licensed profession with its own regulations and ethical codes. Unlike businessmen, we must not permit ourselves to kneel at the alter of profits.
So it’s a Circular #SlideRule ! Outstanding!

After looking for a long time, I finally found this #Sliderule, which belonged to my late father. Some of you will know that these #devices were used, before the advent of digital #Calculators, to perform #arithmetic operations such as #multiplication and #division to about three significant figures, by #scientists and #engineers.

Been there, done that. It’s a real easy mistake to make. Some other Slide Rule manuals spend a lot of pages on “How to Read the Scales” exercises. Practice makes Perfect!
According to the #sliderule manual, I'm supposed to multiply and divide with the C & D scales. The trouble is i am only getting the correct answers with the A & B scales. On the left, I'm multiplying 2 x 2 and getting 4.4. On the right, it's 4.
I have decided to make a small, circular #SlideRule part of my everyday carry.
I will not be taking questions at this time.
Found in a thrift store. Hard to believe that people used to use this actual thing to do actual calculations to fly actual planes. #SlideRule #AnalogComputer #aviation
