Hiring seems to be at least just as hard now as I recall from 10 years ago... and I know it's also hard from the job-seeking direction too, it took me months of mostly never even getting acknowledgements to applications for jobs I'd selected as a very good fit, taken the time to tailor cover letters for, etc... it was hell.

I'm looking for work as a Senior Software Engineer. Network programmer since 1990, with a Web focus. I've implemented many protocols and designed some too.  Worked on early RFCs; wrote seminal tutorials on Web tech; wrote the first anti-censorship proxy, CGIProxy, in 1996. I have a ton of experience in many different business contexts, including running a small USG-funded NGO from 2011-2019. My main languages are Go, JavaScript (Node.JS/client-side), Perl, Python, and Rust, but I learn quickly and can pick up other tech as needed. Good at teaching. Record of solving hard problems creatively. Can manage if needed, but I'd rather be doing technical work.

Open to permanent or contract, full or part time. Need to work from home. Ideally I'd work in public interest technology (PIT), but can do corporate work too. Available immediately.

I'm also very experienced in #CloudNative/#DevOps technologies, and have been the one devising solutions and maintaining infrastructure in a fast-paced startup environment in my previous employment.

I'm passionate in what I do and those that know me here or IRL would know that I'm always yapping about the things I'm learning or working on - I love discussing them, and I love helping people out - esp those on the same boat as me.

This passion has led me into writing and maintaining tons of #FOSS projects like Mango: a content distribution framework based on #Django for #Mastodon and #Bluesky that powers various bots of mine like @lowyat@mastodon.social and @waktusolat@mastodon.social, Charts: a #Helm chart repository for an easy and reproducible deployment strategy for all my projects and everything else I self-host on my #homelab, and Orked: O-tomated #RKE distribution, a collection of scripts I wrote that are comprehensively documented to enable everyone to self-host a production-grade #Kubernetes cluster for absolutely free.

I'm based in Malaysia, but I'm open to just about any on-site, hybrid, or remote job opportunities anywhere. Honest question for the folks out there with a career-level title in software engineering: how do you make goals or plan what to learn, aside from immediate demands from your employer?

I don’t believe everyone has to program outside of work as a hobby, nor should everyone constantly “show growth” — that’s unsustainable. And I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions or annual goals (that often end up too inflexible for reality), but it is that season and so I am thinking about it.

If you don’t already have immediate needs or projects to work on, what tells you to spend more time learning something? How do you decide what to use as far as programming languages, practices, patterns, tools, etc? I’ve got some of my own answers but I’m playing it close to the chest here just to learn more about how others decide these things.

I, a #SoftwareEngineer for nearly 20 years, just spent 15 minutes trying to figure out why something wouldn't compile only to realize that I needed to capitalize the second 't' in "Tooltip".

Yeah, we shouldn't let LLMs write code for us, but there must be some kind of happy medium where they can help us avoid being this obtuse.

So, after being laid off a few months ago, I find myself still looking for work.
