The Song Sparrows have arrived. You can't possibly miss them as they belt out their songs.
A lifer bird for me: Trumpeter Swans* (Cygnus buccinator). What a noise! Their name makes sense .
They only stay here briefly, waiting for more water opening up further north.
*correction: They are Tundra Swans (Cygnus columbianus). An endangered species.
They still sounded like trumpets .
This fucking city, eh?
A film crew builds a movie set at Bluffer's Park. This is inside an Environmentally Significant area, and the crew have pulled back vegetation that's already host to migrating birds. There are signs telling you that this is an offence.
There's trash strewn everywhere, and no sign of a permit posted. Funny how film crews can break laws freely anytime, but unhoused people get the book thrown at them if they build shelters
Warblers around now: pine, yellow-rumped and orange crowned. Tree swallows are chattering in the air. Hermit thrushes any day! #birds #BirdWatching #SpringMigration
It's a slow night for bird migration in our county according to BirdCast.

birdcast.infoLearning about the connection between midges breeding in spring in the Great Lakes area at the same time warblers are migrating north.
No wonder warblers take a rest in the Great Lakes area, a midge buffet!
Often heard in the woods, but seldom seen (by me). I present the flute-like song of the Wood Thrush. #SoundOn #birds #BirdsOfFediverse #birding #birdwatching #birdPhotography #BirdsOfMastodon #Nature #naturePhotography #spring #SpringMigration #songbirds
Target netting in my yard, I captured a very skulky new yard bird...a Kentucky Warbler!
All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the US Geological Survey.
The floodplain is awash in songbirds, including these Song Sparrows.
A lot of warbler and flycatcher species are moving through now, but they’re not posing for me. Anoka County, Minnesota

I'm in a spot overlooking a balcony that isn't too conducive to bird-feeding but I put out a small container of seeds every few days during this #SpringMigration season since that's when birds will search everywhere for sustenance. The seeds got a bit buried by snow but I think they'll get eaten. I thought I heard a Robin already yesterday!
Counting down the days
'til the Ides of May
when the forest re-greens
and insects re-appear.
Bug-eaters also re-appear
and delimit their territories
with high-pitched chatter.

I love engaging (or consuming) here on on world news, politics, climate action, and a host of other near and dear issues. But I also like to ride my bicycle and photograph birds ‘n’ things.
Here are a few shots from a recent bicycle tour I brought my birding camera on. A week-long, slow-cycling tour from my home in Anoka County to Wabasha, Minnesota and back, stopping occasionally for bird shots. #birdphotography #birding #birdsofmastodon #naturephotography #MNastodon #SpringMigration #birds
Indigo Bunting in Rock Creek Park this weekend. It's felt like a relatively slow #SpringMigration for me so far which I had thought was just down to some bad weather and too many work commitments but seems like a number of East Coast birders I know have been having the same experience. Always a treat though to see one of these beautiful blue boys.

According to Merlin: “More often heard than seen.” That’s certainly been my experience; lucky to both hear and see it on today’s amble, as this one perched on a white oak branch that hung over my trail.
Merlin: “Listen for its incredible, flute-like song. Population is declining; winters in Central America.”

Spectacular day birding the #CentralPark Ramble with the #NYC Audubon--some really nice folks, and great birders.
Warblers were everywhere! I had Canada, Hooded, Bay-breasted, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Black-and-white, Yellow-rumped, Parula, Ovenbird.
Selected shots from today’s amble. Coon Rapids Dam, Minnesota

Absolutely fantastic #SpringMigration day of #Birding #CentralPark today! Had 7 first-of-season #birds: Blue-winged Warbler, Worm-eating Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Gray-cheeked Thrush.
My favorites were the Blue-winged Warblers. There were several of them in the vicinity of the Azalea Pond, all calling noisily, making them relatively easy to spot. #NaturePhotography
