For #fossilfriday I present a statue of Lupe the Colombian Mammoth. 13,000 years ago she died along the banks of the Guadalupe River. Today her bones are housed in San Jose's Children Discovery Museum, with the statue looking through the window like a ghost.

Walking the city with my Nikon DSLR equipped with a vintage Pentax-M 50mm f1.7 SMC. Newbie learning to shoot full manual (and apparently without light/exposure sensor assistance on the D3200). Most shot were blurry over/under exposed messes. A handful came out really nice!

This one is "my take" on a winter war memorial (https://www.hamhelsinki.fi/veistos/talvisodan-kansallinen-muistomerkki/) in the evening light. The lower light, imperfect focus and missing sensor stabilization give it a 90s retro style which in my opinion works well here, making it feel like an old postcard.

Cemeteries are incredible testaments to how much people love one another. Every brick laid, every statue carved, every flower left, is an act of love for someone who has slipped away into the next room.

In 1855 there was a cholera outbreak in Bologna. There were about 70,000 people living in the city with tens to hundreds of people being affected by cholera every day. (On the 12 July there were 169 cases alone registered)

The plaque reads:
"Addi' 22 luglio 1855
In questa via cesso' il morbo cholera
Per grazie di Maria"

On the day of the 22nd of July 1855
In this street, cholera was halted
Thanks to Mary.

Back in the good old days when you'd erect a monument after a pandemic - instead of letting RF "a worm ate my brain" Kennedy Jr. become a health secretary.

Monochrome photo of a white statue of Ignatius, the Catholic saint, partially obscured by leafless branches, standing among some shrubs in front of a building wall of stone blocks. The statue depicts a bald, bearded man in religious robes, holding a walking stick and looking toward left frame. Ignatius founded the order of the Society of Jesus — the Jesuits — to which I (sometimes unwillingly) feel a connection, since I attended a Jesuit school for many years of my childhood. I’m no longer religious, for many reasons, but I still wrestle with that upbringing and try to untangle the good from the bad. Pope Francis, who passed away this morning, was the first Jesuit to be elected to the position. He wasn’t perfect by any means, and the Church he led continues to be a VERY problematic institution, but I appreciated his gestures towards inclusivity (insufficient though they were) and his speaking up for climate justice, for uplifting the poor, and for ending the genocide in Gaza. I hope his successor continues further down that path.

I was at the Teatro Anatomico (Anatomical Theatre) today! There's so much to say about it but we'll just concentrate on the ceiling right now. It was built in 1645 by Antonio Levanti. We have Apollo, the protector of medicine, in the centre and he's surrounded by 14 other constellations. Back in the day consulting the heavens was a pretty normal part of medicine. You know, mercury is in retrograde so we should amputate that toe.
Astrology and medicine were intertwined and every part of the body was associated with an astrological sign. The ceiling was a representation of the medicine of the time and also how the human body and the heavens above were intrinsically linked.
Also, huge thank you to the Arabic world and the Middle East because without their knowledge, ancient science and wisdom - we would not have modern medicine! ✨
