This Is My Glasgow

Sunset at Glasgow's Mitchell Library in North Street. The library opened in 1911 and the figure on top of the dome was created by Thomas John Clapperton. She's officially titled Literature, but more often, she's simply referred to as Mrs Mitchell, especially by children.

This equestrian statue, known as the Golden Rider (der Goldene Reiter), portrays Augustus the Strong, dressed in Roman armour. It was commissioned after his death, in 1733, by his son and heir.
Augustus was the Elector of Saxony and sometime King of Poland, and was the man responsible for creating the baroque city and art collections that attract so many visitors to Dresden today.
He was reputedly able to break a horseshoe with his bare hands.

This Is My Glasgow

The Stewart Memorial Fountain in Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow, with John Mossman's statue of Ellen Douglas, the eponymous hero of Sir Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake, at the top lit by the first rays of the rising sun. Originally, this figure was guilded, which would have made it even more impressive than it is today.

In between, he was involved in laying the first transatlantic telegraph cables, he served as the University's Professor of Natural Philosophy, he helped define the lowest possible temperature in the Universe, he created one of the first houses in the world to be fully lit by electricity and became the first scientist to be ennobled and so enter the House of Lords. Not bad for a young lad from Belfast!
