Did you know word order in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is not the same as in English? It's a whole different "natural language"!

Apparently many Australian Aboriginal cultures have also had manually coded language, as signed counterparts of their oral languages!

Indigenous sign language is not only used by people with hearing loss. Many Indigenous languages are multi-modal!

There's the Warlpiri language, spoken by about 3,000 of the Warlpiri people in the Northern Territory, and there's Warlpiri Sign Language AKA Rdaka-rdaka ("hand signs") with about 1,500 signs.

And did you know there are one-handed and two-handed fingerspelling alphabets used in different English-speaking countries?

Auslan is a visual language using hand shape, orientation, location, movement, and expression! There's about 38 major hand shapes and 25ish variants.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Auslan today.

About Auslan and Stenography Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the sign language used by the majority of the Australian Deaf community. It’s a natural language distinct from spoken or written English. The two-handed manual alphabet in Auslan is used to fingerspell proper nouns, technical terms, and words for which there is no widespread sign: maybe around 10% of conversation. A machine stenographer presses multiple keys together like playing a piano chord to produce whole words at over 200 words per minute. Key combinations usually correspond to sounds like “ch” or the “oi” sound in “ploy” rather than individual letters. When a whole word cannot be written, however, a stenographer may use fingerspelling instead to type the word out 1 letter at a time. Auslan and stenography both offer ways to communicate at conversational speeds using your hands!

My multisteno #keyboard arrived. I love the camera mount on it. I can layer it over my keychron and feel super cool.

I've got months and months ahead of me learning to use it, but I'm hopeful that further reducing my key travel distance will help the difficulties my hands have been having lately. #Dvorak was a big help for the last 15 years but I need more help now.

...PARCE QUE EN FAIT la sténo est un système super fermé, les machines coûtent une blinde, la formation coûte une blinde, la licence coûte une blinde (sinon je serais sténographe depuis mes 15 ans).

Alors que c'est un outil génial et tellement indispensable, qui sert notamment à faire du transcript en direct, tenir les minutes d'une réu ou d'un procès, prendre des notes excessivement rapidement (on parle de 200-300 wpm VS 80-120 pour les plus rapides des dactylos)

mais surtout c'est un outil d'accessibilité inestimable. par exemple pour faire des transcripts pour les sourds et malentendants. Et moi quand un outil d'accessibilité est propriétaire et méga payant, ça me donne envie de casser des trucs.

C'est pour ça que j'ai crié en continu quand j'ai découvert Plover, https://plover.wiki/index.php/Plover_Wiki projet de logiciel (fonctionnel et disponible, depuis plusieurs années maintenant) ouvrant la sténo en open source, gratos.

À ma connaissance, des claviers de sténo open source, y en a sur le marché (je lurk sur le Georgi depuis un moment http://plover.stenoknight.com/2019/12/georgi-review.html ) mais pas vraiment dont tu peux imprimer la pcb toi-même, mais la fonction est implémentée dans QMK ( https://docs.qmk.fm/features/stenography ) et le Planck a une fonction de chording.

Tu vois c'est pour ça que je fantasme depuis un moment sur un mini ordi comme le DevTerm de chez Clockworkpi ( https://www.clockworkpi.com/shop ), mais avec un clavier de sténo, des fonctions minimalistes de traitement de texte, la possibilité de projeter sur un écran et un driver qui permettrait à l'imprimante thermique de chier du texte à mesure qu'il est écrit, en direct.

enfin, le reste est facile, et peut-être que je me sous-estime, mais je pense que c'est pas demain que j'ai les compétences pour pondre ce driver alors ma machine de sténo pas cher et accessible à tous reste un fantasme jusque là.

CECI ÉTANT DIT. Avec les outils existants (votre Planck et Plover) mes chers petits libristes,vous avez plus aucune excuse pour ne pas rendre vos events accessibles aux sourds et malentendants, donc je vous enjoins à vous en emparer massivement et faire le job. M'kay?

Something that'd be super cool is if streamers and YouTubers and people involved in closed captioning and transcription networked more closely with each other.

So, this project is called the Open Steno Project. It's a volunteer-run group that produces software, educational material, etc., in order to bring down the costs of stenography equipment, technology, and education. I love this project with all my heart.

And this is the Discord server, for anyone wanting to talk to transcriptionists, closed captioners, stenography students, court reporters, and hobbyists about this field (I'm in it! It's super fun!). It's not specifically a place for *hiring* someone, but getting to know the industry and the people in it is a net good. And you might even learn stenography while you're at it, idk. 😎​

Transcribed the first two chapters of Ursula Vernon's _Illuminations_ for #steno practice today. The first chapter was a bit slow getting all the proper nouns defined. But then I cruised through the second chapter (1500 words) in about 21 minutes.

Nice to get into a rhythm and just tap out words for a while. I'm definitely getting to the point where I don't have to look at the output; I know when I've made a mistake by feel. And I've finally got all my quotation strokes down so dialogue isn't such a chore to copy out anymore.
