I loved #studying in the #US, but I'm not sure the current regime would welcome me

rowmyboat@glammr.us - Soooo in the last couple days groups of international students at universities all across the country have had their visas cancelled. I’ve heard so far of Ohio State, UMass, Stanford, Arizona State, UCLA, Minnesota State. There are probably more.

Weekly #shopping has recently been given a fun twist: #BoycottUSA

Fortunately, it's easy in #France: goods from the region and the own country have always been specially labelled. And we now also cheekily turn US goods upside down.

A new study: 62% of French people support the #boycott of US products. Falling numbers also in #tourism, #working, #studying. The #study reveals an unprecedented collapse in the image of the US among French people.

This is going to be a little weird because it’s written for my much more developed and longstanding audience on instagram (many of whom have been with me for years), but I want to replicate what I’m doing over there so that folks know they can come here and find the same thing, so here it goes.

Because my focus on this microblog has always been to re-engage with educating, I don’t often get into the details of how I create my visuals here.

My goal is to create a visual that inspires a studious mindset, something that rehabilitates the idea of learning that we inherit from Western institutions, often as a rote and punitive practice. Learning is and can be a pleasure. So that’s what I aim to construct here.

But I also know many of you are interested in the how of how I create, so I wanted to incorporate more of that, both to show you what I use and also to share some of the de-influencing behind it as well.

Today I just wanted to highlight an ink I’ve been loving. I’ve been exploring the Filipino ink brand @inksbyvinta, a company with a mission to support education. So, I’ve been buying ink samples of their inks and trying to decide what I want to add to my collection.

A full bottle is a big commitment, which is why I’ve been testing samples first. A current favorite sample that I hope to add to my collection eventually is Pusan, this lovely, pale, color changing shimmer ink you see pictured. It has a beautiful silver shimmer and shades a more reddish purple with dark blues.

I feel inspired when I break it out and much more driven to create, even though it is lighter than my usual inks. I treasure that sense of joy.

QOTD: What is your go to writing color right now?

The first set of my #studies is ready, two more to go. I've done a lot of those too. The first set came with 26 pages + the actual #competence #test material, which is sorted in folders. ☺️

The competence test is on June 5th. All the #material must be ready by May 14th. In between, I'll meet with the #Assessor (a #data #security #lawyer) and he will hopefully tell me if the material is ready." Wish me luck! ☺️

I think some of you may find this interesting. I myself am beginning to study all of this, as I am fascinated by the singing methods and knowledge of the time. It is a bit difficult doing it being blind and unable to read music, but fortunately, there are ways around that. My perfect pitch and good memory for lyrics also helps. Still, if anyone would like to work with me on this i.e. study together or even give some advice, I would appreciate it.

Below, you will find various links related to theory, harmony and counterpoint, and a comparison of older and modern methods of teaching and singing. While this relates to choirs and opera, it also relates to the theatre, particularly operettas and such.

Studying Music: Part I

My one criterion was that the methods and books used had to be from the time of Ivor Novello, preferably from his youth (born 1893). If I were to start in the early nineteenth century, which is where most of my preferred non-musical educational material is from, I would miss extremely important developments in classical music. Starting at the birth of his mother, Clara Novello Davies, in 1861, would be fine. However, since her own book, which I am using as my main text and guide, was written in 1928, I went with that of her son. In the following sections, you will find the books I am using. One thing I have not included, though it was a huge influence in Ivor's own writing style, was theatrical music, such as that found in operettas and Edwardian musical comedies. That is such a large topic for discussion that I feel it deserves its own separate post, as does Ivor's music, since it's an interesting blend of all of the above. But this is well outside the scope of traditional musical study.

In the next entry (the below link), we will delve into vocal training and why the singers of Novello's time sound so wonderful.

Finally, since I mentioned the exercises, here they are, for anyone who wants to try them. Note that these are the Preliminaries and Breathlock Physicals, not the vocal exercises. But I have provided the link to her book as well, for those who may wish to go further.

What is disappearance? In short, it is a repressive tactic used by authoritarian states to terrorize the civilian population into submission.

While the term “the disappeared” emerges in the aftermath of authoritarianism in Guatemala (1966) and Operation Condor in South America (perhaps most famously General Pinochet and his reign of terror in Chilean, but also juntas across South America including in Argentina), it describes a tactic that has long been in use and continues to be used by authoritarian regimes across the world, so it’s a concept to be aware of and understand.

Disappearance is characterized by illegal abduction, secret detention centers, torture, death, and unofficial burial.

Disappearance was, in theory, a way to avoid responsibility. The state maintained plausible deniability while effectively terrorizing their citizens into submission. The message is clear, you could be next.

QOTD: Have you heard of disappearing?

I will be so incredibly happy if it's a week from today – all exams over and finally time to rest from all the #studying and get back to more #blogging / #creating stuff on the web 🫶

Well, the bad news is that the new semester already starts the Monday afterwards 🫠 But it won't be as math-heavy as the last one, there will be more of a focus on the CS subjects this time.

The last five days been working on getting lecture slides semi automatically into #anki.

For the first three days battling with #python in extracting the data from a 77 page PDF.

On the fourth day finally got the first complete PDF worth of lecture slides into Anki after 8 hours. Most of the time manual pattern matching and setting up a good enough data structure.

On the fifth day, got the second set of lecture slides which are only 44 pages and were decreased down to 12 pages and took 5 hours. Most of the time was converting the manual pattern matching from the fourth day into an automatic sequence and writing up documentation on how to reproduce.

After spending so much time in trying to semi automate the process, I have been questioning if it would have been faster to do it all manually. Hopefully the upcoming sets of slides will go much faster and plan to release the code in the next couple of days.

Time to assemble my Bachelors Blanket now that I am ready to do my last exam for it. I am six months over the recommended time, but I am making it.

These represent 3,5 years of lectures, seminars and team meetings at work where my hands needed something to do.

This assembly is going to take some time too.

Thinking I'll put this over my yellow reading chair. So I can fittingly sit on it while doing my masters.
