Curse this wretched old age,
which makes you so ugly.
That’s how much this delightful puppet
is ground down by old age.
Even if you live for a hundred years,
you’ll still end up dying.
Death spares no-one,
but crushes all underfoot.

“The fool thinks he has won,
when speaking with harsh words.
However, patience is the true victory,
for those who praise patience.
“When you get angry at an angry person,
you just make things worse for yourself.
When you don’t get angry at an angry person,
you win a battle hard to win.
“When you know that the other person is angry,
if you’re patient, mindful and calm,
then you act for the good of both
for yourself and the other person.
“People unfamiliar with the Buddha’s teachings
consider that the person who acts
for the good of both oneself and the other
to be a fool.”

“Hey monk, do you think you have won this battle?”
suttafriends.orgFor long, I've been intrigued by the Kalama #Sutta and its commentaries. In particular, the "grounds for the acceptance of a thesis".
I'm nowhere near writing a commentary of my own, so I thought I should publish my appendix with the material found in the #PaliCanon.
See links below. I've put it as a pull request I'll keep open for a month for anyone to comment.

Small victory
Got a first model out, maxing out at ~30% accuracy. A second iteration tweaking the learning rate seems on a better trajectory.
For this #LanguageModel I used the entire #Sutta Nipata both as training and evaluation sets, so there's a chance the model is memorizing more than learning. I'll test it out on the Vinaya just to see how it generalizes.
Another incredible Sutta discussion with Venerable Candā of Anukampa Bhikkhuni Project - a pioneering project working to establish the first Theravada Bhikkuni Monastery in the UK where women can train towards full ordination. Please support them if you can.

@ShallowWater @abitofzen glad it helped!
You might want to check out the Dhammacakkappavattana #Sutta (the first sermon of the Buddha from the #PaliCanon).
Tanha / craving comes up in the 2nd noble truth (the noble truth of the origin of suffering).

@markcooper glad to hear it was helpful.
Challenging people to test and experience the teachings on #karma, and know for themselves if something is beneficial or not, this stance is quite unique compared to other faith-based philosophical positions.
Although there are caveats to interpreting this #sutta as a praise of #skepticism for instance it is unclear what "know for yourself" means when contrasted to all the things we're invited to not take for a basis for knowledge earlier in the text.
Maybe it's the mindset of Mastodon being different, but I feel a renewed energy working on two commentaries, one on the Kalama #sutta the other one on Hyakujo's fox #koan
Each represent a different #buddhist schools, each their own difficulties.
1/2 - Commenting on the #PaliCanon gives me the impression of walking a cyclic hypergraph of neverending conceptual ramifications, sometimes contradictory, that nevertheless need to be hold together or else I'd only deliver a half-baked #DhammaTalk.
It is really helpful for our #sutta reading if we have a general idea of where the places are when they are mentioned. Remember, the events in the suttas took place in real places that we can even visit today.
This page gives you some PDFs of a simple map that you can print out and use as a bookmark in whatever sutta book you are reading. Then you can check it as you read.

Can animals practice the #Dharma? The Akkhaṇa #Sutta seems to say no. What do you think?

Mendicants, there are eight lost opportunities for…
buddhistuniversity.netToday's #sutta is short and very sweet. We get to learn how generosity is a sign of faith (Pali: saddhā).
It is easy, in times of difficulty to question our own faith, but here we learn how simple it can be to find it in ourselves and others.
