@lproven @theregister as much as I love the #freedom and #autonomy of #linux it's definitely a #purest #technically #adept approach to self #digitization

The majority of people I've worked with want nothing to do with knowing how anything works. They just want their computer to auto-load all their bents like #magic , be able to access anything on the #Network without getting permission and install any #app on their #device they choose.

#Government , #libraries especially, need to untether from #broZone #architecture and do things for themselves again.

I'm not a #statistician and only have #anecdotal #evidence to go by, but I don't see a whole lotta folks doing, or even wanting, to do things themselves. Let alone, pick up the #skills required to do so.

The worst part, the people actually willing and able to help, can't afford to, because it doesn't #pay well, enough.

So, we all have to figure out a way to fix "that" first. But, that would require everyone believing doing #work themselves is better for them and the #Earth in the long run rather than #automating each and every #human #interaction out of #existence

We got our kitchen done last year (long overdue) and the workmen left some excess wood propped up on some scaffolding on our fire escape (it's in bad nick, freeholder doesn't want to fix yet evidently).

@siv @shojiwax agree. Though I use #Tusky which doesn't appear to have a payment process but I'm open to being directed to such a thing.

I do pay my instance however, but once again it's more of a donation than a cast in stone #requirement.

So many folks are using #Mastodon now and it seems to me that the ppl doing the work should be #reimbursed for their costs #technically (hardware, services etc), as well as for the work they must either put in themselves or get #volunteers to do for them, which isn't always % effective as evidenced by some instances where a user gets their arse kicked for a #spelling error seen by one #moderator as death for the user and by another on the same instance as ho hum not worth a thought.

I only #donate $8 per #month which in real terms is nothing, but in terms of the value we derive from the #platform as users can be life changing for an #instance manager, if enough ppl say I really want this to continue, so I will donate the equiv of a cup of #coffee for example and do so #monthly.

- #sessionapp relies on #blockchain, making some people unhappy,
- #xmpp (#conversations and others) requires a server
- #briar is not "fashionable"
- #jami uses Google notifications

Philosophically, I suspect bc Twitter is trying to do a Central Planning Committee of the USSR, 'I alone can fix it' thing, and funnel us into one place, it's in trouble. But technically is a whole other issue: 'Here’s how a Twitter engineer says it will break in the coming weeks: One insider says the company’s current staffing isn’t able to sustain the platform.'
