This #emboidery #floss was a hype since 1905/1910 ... and we can imagine that some of the governesses who had the misfortune to be on board, used it for #embroideries in the luxury rooms of the #Titanic.
I was at this #GatherFiberSymposium event yesterday, and we all yearned to be at the protest. But I will say that hanging with artists was really good for my soul. Artists are taking no shit.
Anyway: so many great events coming this month if you like textile arts. And our #IpswichLace event made the #Boston Globe today.
The #GatherFiberSymposium got noticed by the local media! We were psyched that they invited our lace group in to their month of fiber art celebrations. There are a ton of great events going on.
More details from The Boston Globe (or search archive.youknow for an unpaywalled version).

The Boston GlobeI've tried fatter linen (60/2) and finer linen (90/2). The 90/2 looks closer, and you can see I also tried that with a heavy outline thread (we call that gimp, sorry--I know).
But the pinholes were bothering me. I can get rid of them with some pulling on the lace in all directions. I assume that would be like a washed item might be treated? And why the pinholes aren't apparent in the museum one.
Anyway, more testing to do. But am getting closer, I think.
#WIPWednesday and my experiments in reproduction lace continue.
I'm trying to replicate the lace from this baby cap in the MFA #Boston. but I don't know how wide it actually is. So I'm testing out some versions.

collections.mfa.orgIn 2008, a pile of old junk was found under floorboards in an Austrian castle. VERY old junk - from the 1400s. It included several pieces of linen, which unlike wool or silk, usually decays quickly.
More specifically they found women's underwear, which is virtually never mentioned in surviving medieval texts. The discovery pushed back the invention of the bra by *several hundred years*. It's very modern looking.
The US patent for bras only goes back to 1914. At the earliest something like modern bras were thought to be worn in France in the late 1700s.

"Oltre Terra, Formafantasma’s ongoing project and traveling exhibition, explores the history, ecology, and global dynamics of wool extraction and production. It goes further than the simple definition of wool as material, to look at it within a much broader ecology. "

www.stedelijk.nl@Rosaliesmedievalwoman Lovely costume! The medieval silk trade is so interesting. Could you post some of the C13-14th images with this triple-dot motif?

My heart is broken that they showed only a smidge of #IpswichLace and didn't even say its name....sigh.

Well, something fun to think about. There's going to be a #LaceMarathon in June.
I love #weaving. My skills are pretty basic. I've mostly been weaving on #rigidheddle Now I'm learning how to weave on a #4shaftloom. I love #looms and #textilehistory.
This particular project is one of the first ones I've warped without help. Mistakes were made. We're on a break. So it sits in the middle of our tiny living room until I have the heart to go back and fix it, thread by thread. I'm happy to be learning so much from this project and yet, we're still on a break.
Fabric of Britain - three episodes in one video. Knitting, wallpapers and embroidery (I skipped the wallpaper part for now, but will probably watch it later on).
