We had to have some roofing work done around a month ago now. We had put down a deposit on the work, and the job was completed, but we never heard back from the mid-to-late 20's year old guy who did the work afterward.
He was a really nice young guy and being the honest people that we are, we reached out to him today to ask when he would be billing us for the job. He responded that he "got really sick" some time after the job and "just can't remember stuff a lot of the time" now. He says he'll get to it when he feels up to it.
This is really the future we're building, isn't it?
Thankfully it was a "minor" heart attack. He's really into hiking and camping and can't figure out why his health's been so bad for 6 months. I just don't think it's my place to launch into the "COVID talk" but I feel bad for the guy. He's hoping to do our roof work in a couple weeks. I'll see if an opportunity presents itself to casually drop COVID into a conversation.
@BE I am so freaked out by this.
@BE that's so sad 😿
@BE I'd consider sending him a percentage of what you think the job probably cost & calling it a partial payment.
@BE Maybe work with the guy to get him paid even if he isn't billing you formally? Like work to get the bill?
It sounds like he might be in a place of real struggle and the infusion of the cash you could provide might make a giant different for him.
@BE Poor guy - he's way too young for this to be happening. And yeah, I see how the dots are likely connected. It sucks on many levels, big and small. I hope his future is better than the present seems to indicate.
Jeebus fuck
@BE That's so sad. I hope he can get better.
@BE 😬😬😬
@BE Somebody we know died of a heart attack a year after "recovering" from "mild" covid.
I do this whenever possible. Just a simple, 'yeah having had mild covid causes a lot of heart attacks,' in sympathetic tone
If they don't seem too opposed, I can add, 'you can prevent another one by masking at work'
Planting seeds!
They might not take it me up on it, but I'm getting the idea out there
I think it's very very important to include the word 'mild'
And to be as brief as possible, ofc
Had to pull up an old post here for an unfortunate update.
We went back to this guy because we had another roofing job that we needed done and he was our first call. He said he was happy to take it on and scheduled us for almost a month ago now. He tore a ligament in his knee on the job before ours, unfortunately. These things happen.
However, while rehabbing that, in and out of doctor’s offices, etc. he got “sick” again. Checked in with him this morning to see how he was doing, as he’d tentatively scheduled us for next week and he had a heart attack yesterday.
