On this day in 1961, Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected leader of Congo, was murdered by firing squad as a culmination of two assassination plots by the U.S. and Belgium.

Lumumba's anti-imperialism and vision of a united Congo made him an enemy to both countries.
