I was going to post this as a reply to @kathryntewson but all of you might appreciate it.

Lifehack from a native of the frozen wastelands: avoid walking on pavement. Walking on grass, dirt, gravel, whatever is much easier because it’s not a sheet of glass death

Also: kitty litter won’t melt ice but it will provide traction to make it safer to walk on.

Another tip: if your car a) is rear wheel drive and b) isn’t full of people and/or stuff, put something heavy in your trunk, close to the axle. A huge bag of kitty litter will help keep your car from fishtailing, you can spread it for traction if you get stuck, AND you can donate it to a shelter come spring.

(I prefer ice melt to kitty litter, but I’m betting a lot of places are sold out of it right now)

@jurijuri The big buckets of kitty litter work well in pickups since they are waterproof. We have a couple of big buckets in the back of the truck right now.
