Isn't there an absolute defence in English law that the defamatory statement is true?

@Paulos_the_fog I’m not a lawyer but logically that should be an absolute defense against defamation regardless of jurisdiction.

Not so - in Thailand for example, saying nasty things about someone is a criminal offence and the veracity of the statements is not a defence.

@Paulos_the_fog She's not suing for defamation, she's suing for "breach of privacy" and suing the ICO for refusing to intervene. Just the facts.

Yes but it's a fairly recent change (2013) so it's possible that she either doesn't know about it or hopes that he doesn't.
