Some people start off thinking I'm a genius. Others start off thinking I'm an idiot. Occasionally, as they get to know me, they'll switch from one to the other. But rarely does anyone see the big picture -- the whole person that exists behind their superficial impression of me.

The truth is, I'm both, in a sense. What you get depends on you viewing angle, expectations, and subconscious biases. Some people see what I can do, and forget what I can't. Other people see what I can't do, and forget what I can. Neither group is doing me any favors.

I'm just a regular person, whose mind isn't shaped like yours. Programming, logic, math, music, and abstract reasoning come ridiculously easy to me. Remembering your name or what you asked me to do 2 minutes ago, or staying focused on the topic you want me to focus on, are really freaking hard for me. If you expect the world from me, you'll be let down. If you expect incompetence, I will be let down.

@hosford42 Similar but different... I also have a hard time remembering that what is easy for me is not easy for everyone else...
@Pjcoyle It takes conscious effort for me, too. But I'm not going to yell at someone or publicly humiliate them for not being able to do what I do easily, either.
