I'm watching the debates on CW usage and am trying to figure out how one makes this work across a widely federated network where expectations are likely quite varied.

I'm not sure it's possible for even well-intentioned folks to *know* what all different people might be expecting CWs for. I saw one for "eye contact" on a photo the other day, which is something I would have never thought of previously, for example.

It feels like at best each server can advertise expectations for local accounts?

Personally I try to hit spoilers and political related stuff with CWs, and generally don't share things that are (to my mind) terribly disturbing or controversial.

I feel like from a technical standpoint, adding the ability for users to add CWs to Boosted posts might be a valuable feature as it would seem like beyond the situation of "I'm on a server that expects X, Y, Z to be CW'd" there's the whole "I'd like to share this but wish it were CW'd" scenario.

@swetland I think it's also a sort of contract between you and your mutual followers. I've been asked to cw certain stuff I posted about and I agreed it was appropriate.

One feature suggestion I've seen is to let people auto-cw certain instances or users, which could be a cheap client-side feature. Until then, they can hit the unfollow button 😛

@War_Kittens Most clients handle filters by simply hiding the content without any context. It's almost as good as a block. The reason CWs are better is because they give the person a small piece of context, and the option to engage with it.
