Periodontal diseases can affect one tooth or many teeth. The main cause of periodontal diseases is a bacterial plaque which is a sticky, colourless film that constantly forms on the teeth. If the plaque is not removed, it can turn into a hard substance called calculus or tartar in less than two days.

According to the CDC, the prevalence of periodontitis in the U.S., 47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease which increases with age. 70.1% of adults 65 years and older have periodontal disease.
