Advice needed on Facebook alternatives for the Fedi

@FediFollows
I thought diaspora was meant to be for that? I never used it myself but I remember when it was launched that was it's main campaign point.

Diaspora isn't part of the Fediverse, and Diaspora's developers have said they will probably never be part of the Fediverse 😞

(To get technical, Diaspora doesn't support the ActivityPub protocol which Mastodon, PixelFed, PeerTube etc all use. The devs of Diaspora don't like ActivityPub for some reason, and refuse to have anything to do with it.)

My understanding has actually always been that D* _is_ a part of the fediverse, and that being in the fediverse (which consists of multiple protocols) and supporting ActivityPub (used by Mastodon and friends) are two separate things.

At least that's what Wikipedia and several other websites lead me to believe.

The terms have changed over time, but I think the most commonly used definition right now is a site that supports interoperability through the ActivityPub standard, which means people on Mastodon, PixelFed, PeerTube, Pleroma etc etc can follow and interact with each other.

Diaspora doesn't support ActivityPub, and says it never will, so it is totally cut off from all these other sites.
