1. The US was founded based on genocide and slavery (racism). Little has changed so far. White supremacists would never acknowledge these historical facts.
2. Ending slavery through the civil war had also an economic component. Rising capitalism needed "free workers", i.e. people who are not slaves, but "free" to sell their labor power, temporarily, and could be fired any time without any further responsabilities for the company owner
