"We" aren't failing at controlling climate change. That's because "we"- the actual people- have little power to make the decisions necessary to fix things.

Instead, this is being done to us.

The small group of sociopathic billionaires driving the destruction would like nothing more than for us blame ourselves for what they are actively doing to us, absolving them of blame.

So stop saying "we" are failing. We're not. We're fine.

@alexwild There's some truth to this but it's not correct either. Plenty of people are making terrible individual choices as well.

@edwiebe @alexwild I have a really hard time judging how my individual decisions affect the climate. And then there are some instances, where I would like to act more responsible but it would mean that my career suffers or my employer would get quite annoyed.

AGW is a systemic problem. It cannot be solved through individual action but a part of it is making sure that individual responsible acts are beneficial for the individual.

@georgramer @alexwild

It's not difficult to figure out what is good and what is bad from the climate's perspective. If your choice uses fossil carbon it's a bad choice.

I agree that there are huge system barriers.

We need to acknowledge personal responsibility as well.

We can't wait for all of the barriers to fall. We need also to tear at them ourselves.

@edwiebe @alexwild There is a carbon cost to pretty much everything. Yes, taking the bike vs taking an ICE car is obvious. And using a heat pump vs. burning gas for heating is too. But that's it for the easy choices.

Is it better to keep using my new wood pellet central heating or should I tear it out.
Is it better to get strawberries from a local green house or from a Spanish farm?
Should I get my groceries delivered or pick them up at a central store?
And so on...

@georgramer @alexwild I guess if one is serious about carbon and choosing minimum pollution one can do some research. Yes, the grocery store is tricky. I suspect it's reasonable to assume that everything in the store is roughly equivalent.

This will change as carbon costs increase and food with a higher carbon cost becomes more expensive.

Here though, the 'billionaires' will act. They'll increase all prices to even things out at a higher level, in order to better profit.

@edwiebe @georgramer @alexwild Why would billionaires act in that specific way? Can you give me an example?

It seems that very roughly, the price of something reflects how much energy was used to make it – literally, that is what you are paying toward – and therefore how much carbon emissions. I know there are plenty of exceptions, but when in doubt just do whatever option involves spending less money.

@ech @edwiebe @alexwild AFAIK part of the recent inflation was not so much that production costs increased but that customers expected price increases which "allowed" to increase prices for groceries way higher, growing profits.

@georgramer @edwiebe @alexwild I don't get how that would cause misleading price signals about carbon impact.

@ech @edwiebe @alexwild If all prices go up instead of just the ones affected by a carbon tax then the steering effect for consumers is lost.

Follow

@georgramer @edwiebe @alexwild Still not following you. If all prices go up, then the energy-intensive products still cost more, all else being equal, so same steering effect as before.

@ech @georgramer @edwiebe @alexwild the steering effect diminishes as the percentage of cost relating to energy goes down.

@theothersimo @ech @georgramer @alexwild I believe that carbon pricing _will_, as designed, increase costs to purchasers of goods and services that use more fossil carbon. I also believe that, for a while at least, those who can set prices will use this to increase prices of _all_ goods under their control. I base this belief on recent documentation of the causes of current inflation.
