Very amusing to see capitalism apologists on the Fediverse
I mean, it's more understandable on Xitter or Macebook
But here? The place that's sustained by the twine, chewing gum, patreon, and the hopes and dreams of two dozen catgirls? The place that's been going strong without a profit motive for half a decade now?
#Capitalism fucked your mind.
@SallyStrange i wonder if we're doing the same thing to 'capitalism' the right wing does to socialism.
Muddy the definition so nobody has the same definition and thus it's turned into a pejorative for everyone.
Trying to differentiate the nuance between a market system and 'capitalism' isn't great in this format 😬
No excuse. The info is right there, you need to sort it out better.
Most of the muddying actually comes from defenders of capitalism who have only superficial understanding, if even that much.
Understand first of all that the word capitalism itself was originally coined by critics of the system. It was always a bad thing, but the word has been rehabilitated by some.
You know there are people here who can help you see the true defining characteristics of capitalism if you are willing to examine things.
@RD4Anarchy @pixelpusher220 right, like, I was just talking about two specific defining characteristics of capitalism as we currently know it: the concept of LLCs and marginal utility theory
I'm always trying to be more precise and specific in my understanding and explanation, so no, I don't really worry that I'm muddying definitions as a habit. If things seem unclear, that's an opportunity to explore and hopefully learn.
I mean, for starters, it's called "capitalism" because it's all about capital. And this is where most people get lost right off the bat.
Analyzing what capital really is leads one behind the curtain to find...
NOTHING
Nothing but an idea that has been used to enslave us.
Why do we need capital? The true answer to this question tells us all we need to know.
An individual's answer to this question tells us all we need to know about the state of their understanding/beliefs.
@pixelpusher220 @RD4Anarchy @SallyStrange
Most basically, capitalism is rule by capital owners.
Capital is the power to command others, quantified and commodified. That is, in contrast to past modes of power like feudalism, there is a market for capital; it can be bought and sold.
@HeavenlyPossum
It's commodification, as mentioned. That's why #Marx started his major work with an extended analysis of the commodity.
It's important to know that #capitalism is the first mode of domination in history which is not (only) executed by humans, but the the basic principles of the mode of production itself. Once established, the process of making (more) money from money through the "valorisation" of labour, becomes an "automatic subject".
@pixelpusher220 @RD4Anarchy @SallyStrange
@messaroundmarx @HeavenlyPossum @pixelpusher220 @SallyStrange
I've likened this to critical mass being reached in a reactor or a star being born. A self-sustaining process was launched at some point in history when capital reaches this "critical mass".
@neonsnake @RD4Anarchy @messaroundmarx @HeavenlyPossum @pixelpusher220 @SallyStrange I think ancaps do actually want to pay explicitly and directly for police protection. (e.g. "Chaos Theory" by Robert Murphy talks about everyone hiring "insurance companies", which are basically private security.) (I'm maybe not using the same definition of "ancap" as you are, though, if so beg pardon.)
The claim that security would be unaffordable is interesting, but I don't think that's the main problem with this approach.
