I really want to create a #DnD magic object called "Markov chain" to see my players' reaction, but I am not sure what powers it should have. Ideas? 😃

@j_bertolotti I would probably brew up something akin to the "wild magic surge" table (maybe selectively tuned for effect, e.g. mostly harmless/silly effects with a few doozies) and have the Chain be 1d4 rolls against that.

@mordremoth
Was thinking along those lines, but would like to incorporate the lack of memory idea. So maybe, once the chain is activated, gets its own initiative count, and act depending only on the very last action made before its turn?

@j_bertolotti @mordremoth @llewelly Aha, but everyone knows that a chain is first and foremost a weapon. Perhaps a Markov chain is a weapon with several states: striking, poised, or tangled. In battle, rather than roll an attack using this deadly chain, you roll to change the state of your chain, and hope for "striking"?

How about: the "Markov Chain Devil", as a lawful evil creature, mimics the last action it observed but monkeypaws it into something eviller.

@j_bertolotti
Especially beware if it gets to act multiple times in a row, as the evil escalates
