Proposal: starting this weekend, we switch hci.social's new account registration to require either:
a) 💌 an invitation from an existing member, or
b) 📪 emailing the admins.

+ Pros: early prevention of trolls sign-ups, which t could get our instance blocked across the fediverse if they use it to harass people in other instances

- Cons: additional friction to sign up process will turn people away

What do other admins think? cc @axz @nigini @YuhanLiu

if the admins are willing to do it, seems like a light "approval" button, rather than an invitation or email would be ideal.

i've been following anyone that follows me, as long as they have some sort of bio that seems legit (phd student/faculty doing HCI) and/or they have either a known parody account name (or one that seems internally credible… e.g., i'd accept anyone with the name clifflampesdeskchair)

@jbigham @andresmh @axz @nigini @YuhanLiu The `vis.social` form is a good template. It's basically: name, email, and a couple lines of text about your interests and yourself.
