De-federation is going to be a mess on Mastodon. If done aggressively this will greatly restrict adoption/growth of the platform. Though I fully understand why one would de-fed. But breaking off from the major instances will Balkanize the platform.

@Cmastication Yeah, there's been similar rumblings over here on qoto ironically due to the refusal to block servers by the admins the others then block us I believe is how it is currently going.

Personally, in the main I'd rather know whats going on and block myself rather than have large chunks of the network go dark because of a choice by an admin, or an admin on the other end.

@magicaltrout agreed. de-fed should be a “nuclear option” not a “house cleaning option”

@Cmastication @magicaltrout will anything other than the nuclear option yield a Mastodon that is sufficiently moderated to protect e.g. Black users from abuse so that they come here? I notice complaints about abuse and a steep decline in the extent to which my follow/follower group extends my horizons relative to Twitter. I worry about that quite a bit.

@russellpierce @magicaltrout it should be available but used very judiciously. The use of that option greatly impacts the effectiveness of the network.

@Cmastication @russellpierce yeah so there's a few bits at play and I wonder how we can make it better.

Qoto has been making waves for good or bad and the policy about not blocking is quite clear, but certain servers have been silenced so you wont see people unless you want to seek them out: qoto.org/about/more#unavailabl

Also the ability to block folks from the fediblock at a personal level is made apparant to you but its not as easy as it could be:
qoto.org/web/statuses/10930368

I wonder if as part of the usability of the plaform or improvements we could possibly bring as a community is making that application of fediblock and any updates easier for folks that want to leverage it.

@magicaltrout @Cmastication maybe also make it easier to run/use community block lists... If n or % of those I specify/follow block a server or person, then block it for just me too?

@magicaltrout @Cmastication I guess using the Blocklists of my social network would require that my Blocklist be either public, accessible to my server admin (I'm guessing it already is), and/or accessible to other server admins (I'm guessing it isn't)?

@magicaltrout @Cmastication it does. I'd like to see something beyond what is put on offer here. If my friend joins a social network I don't want them to have to see heinous things and figure out how to navigate getting and applying a blocklist before they can experience much that is good about the network.

@russellpierce @Cmastication well yes an no, I mean your home feed won't display any of that because you need to follow first to see any thing.

So then you have to figure out the drive by stuff, and like we said the other day, if you defederate you block a lot of stuff and if those people want to be seen they'll just sign up to a more reputable server until they get blocked. So it's going to be an ongoing wack a mole with bad actors for the moderators whilst the reputable servers squash folk who clearly ban their own T&C's

@russellpierce @Cmastication there's certainly something to be said about ways to increase moderators and make their lives quicker and easier

@Cmastication @magicaltrout mastodon.lol/@schock/109383950 has a lot of details... but it boils down to there being no shortcuts and that doing this well is going to be hideously expensive.
