So I am interested to hear from the "hobby programmer" demographic...

What have you used programming for? (in general)

A little more specifically...

What has been your most useful project?

What has been your coolest / most satisfying project? (if diff. from above)

@firestarter451 I do lots of programming for work too, but the most satisfying purely hobby stuff I've done has been microcontrollers-vs-RGB-LED stuff. Plenty of fun there, very different from my work but still needs lots of thinking, and broadly understandable to random non-tech people in the sense of "it looks cool".

@benc @firestarter451 yeah I’ve moved onto a backend/devops role and there’s not much you can show your partner and have them go “oh that’s cool” but change some led colour when I send a tweet and they can see it and appreciate it

@benc @firestarter451 in response to the original question. I built a GPS tracker with GSM and an API that it posts to and an iPhone app to view the location. Tracker turned out to be far too big, but it was so much fun. And I’ve started to lean how to build my own PCBs on the back of it. Will revisit the project soon in an attempt to shrink it. There’s a lot of off the shelf options but I wanted to build my own.
