Is there an example where a successful private platform was abandoned in mass and people moved to a public / open platform instead?

The JMLR story comes to mind, but that's specific to ML research.

@chriswolfvision Not really social network related but most physicists are moving away from closed/corporate software like matlab, origin, lab view towards python or julia

@chriswolfvision which I think is kind of relevant because there are certain network effects with programming languages with available libraries and device support for lab equipment

@monotrox99 Right, but the network effects are smaller IMO, and then there was a real scientific and technical reason to switch from, say, Matlab to PyTorch, which was a big driving factor (and I am not even talking about the high financial costs of Matlab). We don't have this in Twitter vs. Mastodon.
