New project by Meta: A Twitter-like service based on the Instagram infrastructure. It may come out as early as June 2023.

One detail is interesting: You’ll be able to follow accounts from Mastodon. That’s a clever way of increasing the reach of the service. I’m not sure in what other way it’s going to be “decentralized”—given that it’s completely owned and managed by Meta.

It’s clear that Meta will profit from (at least partial) interoperability with the new service, but it may also be good for Mastodon:
* Mastodon users are not excluded from participating.
* If more proprietary services do this, then Mastodon becomes the common denominator, which increases its attractiveness.

@rauschma Facebook will harvest our content, follower lists, boosts, replies etc and sell it to their advertisers. It's in no way 'good for Mastodon'. I think they'll be defederated from most of the network anyway for those reasons. Personally I'd rather not be a Facebook datapoint they sell to whatever shady characters want to do business with them.

@scottgal @rauschma you know, I never really stopped to think about it... What stops basically anybody from doing that on Mastodon today?

@alan @scottgal @rauschma Wouldn't GDPR also stop Facebook from doing it?

If not, why does GDPR stop anyone else (especially anyone homed outside Europe, or too small-potatoes for EU regulators to go after)?
