The only good thing I can say about Ratzinger is that in his writings as pope he did not pontificate, but he moved as a scholar. Because that, basically, was: a scholar. Valuable, too, although on positions unacceptable to me. This was a step, a small one, toward humanizing the figure of the pope (singular these Catholics who present God as man but fail to do the same thing with the pope). At the same time he loved to flaunt all the outward signs of papal power, even at the cost of making a fool of himself.
