I wonder if *one* of the incentives for Google giving out a VPN for Google One subscribers, Google Fi users, and now Google Pixel owners is that it makes it harder to block ads, e.g. with something like Pi-Hole.

I’m genuinely happy to see traffic encrypted through a VPN becoming more the default, and I also don’t really believe Google will use it for ad targeting or anything due to its anonymity by design—but I feel like there may be more than just one-upping Apple’s privacy claims at play.

Why are you happy to see more traffic encrypted through VPN? How is it different from encrypted traffic through ISP directly?
