I didn't have much interaction with others on mas.to, so I decided to be active here as well. With the shutdown of jayus.net, I lost most of my followers and those I followed, but I'm nop, who was active on jayus.net.

@nop@blob.cat mas.to defederates instances for no reason in large amount. :ina_hammer:

@maid @nop Yeah unfortunately mas.to it's one of those instances that doesn't mind blocking entire instances for minor stuff, you can see all the instances that mas.to blocks here

fba.ryona.agency/?reverse=mas.

Now compare that with the number of instances that the instance where i'm now blocks

fba.ryona.agency/?reverse=qoto

You have to be very careful when you move to a mastodon instance and choose wisely otherwise you end on a bubble that it's shielded from the rest of the federation.

If you don't want to leave the mastodon ecosystem, i think vivaldi.social doesn't block anyone.

mas.to has a very fast server response and a simple and good domain name, but the strictness of the blocklist may be an issue for some users. It doesn't seem like a good approach to block the entire instance based on problematic posts from a very small number of people, but considering the cost for the administrators, it might be a practical solution. On the other hand, smaller instances like jayus.net may have unavoidable sudden shutdowns due to various circumstances of the administrators, but the blocklist is not as strict, making it easier to engage in interactions (especially with people who share geeky interests?). Many introductory sites about the Fediverse mention that you can choose your server freely by moving, but in reality, it's difficult to make a choice:blobcatthink:

@nop@blob.cat @ryuichi@qoto.org I ended up running my own. But I do have a backup account on vivaldi.

@maid @ryuichi
Self-hosting is a good solution, indeed. I looked it up recently, and there are services like Masto.host that provide hosting assistance for self-hosting, which is intriguing to me.

@nop@blob.cat @ryuichi@qoto.org Mastodon is probably the heaviest fediverse frontend to run. Your instance is on akkoma I think, its pretty good as well. My instance is using misskey. Both have more functionality compared to mastodon. If you want to check out misskey let me know, Ill send you an invite code.

@maid
Thank you. I'm interested in self-hosting, so I'll do some research on my own. It seems like Misskey and Akkoma can be operated with fewer resources. Also, I've never bought an original domain before, so I'm interested in that too.

@nop@blob.cat Self hosting is quite fun, look for cheap linux vps. I have a quadcore, 8gb ram and 200gb storage vps for 6£ per month. I cant remember how difficult installing akkoma was, but misskey is very easy.

@maid I see. Misskey might be a better choice for me then. Since the currency in my country has become cheaper, I'll try looking for a domestic VPS
