Intellectual property theft, boost please
So, DeviantArt opted in, by default, all existing art on the website for use by third-party AI.
Without notifying their users. For all existing art.
You have to go through your art pieces one by one and tick a box that you do NOT consent to this.
I learnt about it on Birdsite, by accident.
And of course, any inactive user or dead user will have their art used by AI models from now on, even though they never agreed to this.
Disgusting.

@oddtail I can't figure out how to make this question sound inquisitive rather than aggressive, so please forgive me. I am legitimately curious about the perspective that use by AI training models is IP theft though. Help me better understand?

@shadowsonawall @oddtail The model is either a derivative work or an tool for creating derivative works, used without permission of the original creator - and if Copilot tells us anything, these models have a degree of willingness to output their training data in a fairly intact way. See, for instance, https://twitter.com/DocSparse/status/1581461734665367554 - this feels not great to a lot of folks, especially since it then competes with us as creators!

@arcanesciences @oddtail creating derivative works without permission from the original's creator is the issue?

@arcanesciences @oddtail I like the idea of paying someone a commission any time a prompt "... in the style of ___" is used.
What is the reason you create? (if you don't mind my asking, of course)

@arcanesciences @oddtail for what it's worth, I extract a great deal of personal joy and wonder from the window into humanity's art that the models enable. They are the tool I needed to explore my own personal creativity in a way that I could never have imagined before.

@shadowsonawall @oddtail I make things for a connection with other people. For fanfic maybe this means making them smile after a rough day, or inspiring them to draw something or discuss theories with others. For code it means building something cool for and/or with other people.
Not the same as helping the capital class build an other-people's-work blender that they can sell. That has no social factor.
Other creators have their own perspectives. YMMV.
