Please boost to help save the Arctic. We’ve learned a lot about permafrost (frozen ground) and its role in global climate over the past decade. Unfortunately there are some false narratives being driven by the media. Here are some facts driven by our best science. 1) Permafrost underlies 1/4 of N hemisphere land and >1/2 of Canada. This makes 🇨🇦 more of a permafrost nation than a hockey nation. Frozen ground is literally a backbone for ecosystems and infrastructure. 1/

Are you a late stage grad student in climate dynamics, looking for postdoc opportunities?

I'd be happy to talk to you about applying to the NOAA (due Jan 4) or NSF postdocs (due anytime) to come to UIUC.

PIs, please pass this on to any interested students.

I can promise you attentive mentoring, a fantastically functional department, and a very affordable and easy place to live.

Dear Mastadon hivemind:

The BiodiversityStripes.info website is highlighting biodiversity loss, globally and regionally using a similar concept to the climate stripes.

We are looking for other sources of biodiversity data which can be turned into stripes to highlight this critical issue.

Any leads for long & coherent time series welcome!

#introduction - Greetings everyone! I'm P/D at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, was previously 30 years at Columbia/Lamont working in paleoclimate, now encouraging smart people to do amazing things for ocean/climate solutions. I miss the community we had on T. Let's try to rebuild that here! Some people I've found:

Glad to have come to the end of another teaching term at Exeter. Over 60 lectures given on the Fundamentals of Weather and Climate, the Fluid Dynamics of Atmospheres and Oceans, and Numerical Modelling. It is always a privilege to introduce students to new material, and I’ve been excited by their engagement. Some of them even enjoyed my bad jokes…!

Just gave my last lecture to a wonderful group of undergrads and grad students in the Fundamentals of #ClimateChange class. I've been slowly writing up the course notes into a #CreativeCommons textbook. It's not finished by any means, but is available here in case that's useful to anyone:

So let's talk about the original Titan map palette. Why did we choose these colors?

Today's Google Doodle is about Marie Tharp, a pioneering #oceanographer. Click the animation to learn about her - the video and activities are great!

Global temperatures over land are rising substantial faster than for the oceans... so how does that compare with the #Arctic?

+ I will update this graphic annually at zacklabe.com/arctic-temperatur.
+ Data from data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/.

We are extremely excited to share with the climate community (and beyond) the new and improved "Climate Data Guide" (by NCAR).

Explore the background behind 100s of different #weather and #climate datasets, along with the statistical tools to analyze them.

➡️ Check it out at climatedataguide.ucar.edu/, and do share with your networks! #OpenScience #Data

Also, feel free to reach out to the board of advisors if you have any suggests or data inputs! 🥰

I have a monthly 'climate viz of the month' blog that I just started at zacklabe.com/climate-viz-of-th. October's graphic will be coming next week.

Here's an archive of a few others from earlier this year zacklabe.com/blog-archive-2022. #dataviz #OpenScience #climate #weather #python

Looking forward to exploring what has to offer. I’m a lecturer in maths with interests in geophysical fluid dynamics, numerical modelling, machine learning and planetary science.
