There can be moral obligations without a corresponding coercion. There are lots of things you morally ought to do, but that it is wrong for others to compel you to do, or punish you in what we’d consider a coercive way for not doing.

On the point in the essay, my claim is that taking joy in the diverse ways others’ find happiness is ethical, a constitutive part of a well-lived life, and so we ought to try to cultivate it.
