@pluralistic what do you think about the idea of encouraging schools (from high school to universities) to run Mastodon instances? Seems like a natural fit

@travismitchell @pluralistic what about carwash? Shouldn't they have their own server as well?

@travismitchell as well as schools.
People drive in, spend some time, got serviced and drive away.

Usenet started with academia, and the OU and Janet had CoSy instances, so there is precedent.

I can imagine secondary schools, at least, having to heavily moderate, and (frankly) the instances would be in competition with TikTok.

But I think there is a case for community based services, and perhaps District Councils could be persuaded. Now, sociopolitically, would seem like an opportunity - but local authorities are famously slow.

@BobHarvey @pluralistic Thanks for the ideas and kind words. I agree moderation would be demanding with secondary students. I've suggested idea to 2 postsecondary schools - my alma maters - we'll see if any interest.

@travismitchell @pluralistic I have now written to my district and county councillors (that is South Kesteven and Lincolnshire)

At University level it could be a student project, like student radio.

But it is a good idea, and might bear some fruit if we scatter seeds. I will write to my district and county councillors proposing it.
