Tiny HUGE Mastodon Multi-Tips 🐘✨

Now that I have a blog I largely abused character count and created a GIGANTIC Mastodon Tip for you to read or to share with your loved ones 💚

This is an extensive guide in 12 Steps on How to Get Started with Mastodon and how to quickly get to feel at home using it.

If you want to share a specific section with a friend you are trying to persuade to come join us, you can right-click on any section or subsection and “Copy Link” to that specific section.

Warning: It’s also very nerdy! :blobcatnerd:

Have fun and spread the Fediverse love! :blobaww::geodesic:

The really remarkable thing isn't just that #Microsoft has decided that the future of #search isn't links to relevant materials, but instead lengthy, florid paragraphs written by a #chatbot who happens to be a habitual liar - even more remarkable is that #Google agrees.

If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm.

Not the case.

It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people.

Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important *because* it's not connected to gaming any algorithm.

By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it.

So go ahead. Click that like button for its own sake.

"If you are like me: fascinated by, or even just curious about, ancient winemaking methods and how they persist into modern times, or if you have a specific interest in talha wines, you really need this book. You should also be keeping in touch with Paul on his website Wine Disclosures (and check the archives of my blog). If on the other hand you are not so fascinated…. well, maybe you should be 🙂"

I just have to declare my love for Greta Thunberg. She makes me very happy.

This is a beautiful performance, sung in Ukrainian by Georgians (Katie Melua and the Gori Women's Choir), and is associated with Christmas in the West. But it is a New Year song in Ukraine, expressing hope for a prosperous new year.

To my Ukrainian friends - may 2023 be a lot better for your country than 2022.

Happy Christmas everyone, and

Are you new to Mastodon? Have you been gifted your free lecture on all the things you’re doing wrong?

This keeps popping up recently, usually with text like "The ancient frescoes of Pompeii. You see, cats have always been an important part of the art world."

It's fake - AI generated. We have so much amazing cat artwork from history, there's really no need for this nonsense.

I know the definition of "artificial intelligence", but am I right that (in the media at least) it is now pretty much synonymous with "machine learning" - the identification of patterns in data that may not be detected and understood by humans, but can have predictive capability. Likewise with "algorithm" actually, in that the word is now used in a very specific, often sinister, way by the media

I'm new on this platform and still finding my way around. I have many interests, and my focus changes a lot, so it's difficult to know what to highlight, but let's try.

Wine is a big interest. It was massive, but I'm now a lot less geeky and more into enjoying drinking it. I still occasionally blog on the subject here: www.winenous.co.uk.

Georgia is also currently a big topic of interest: the country (not the US state), and its people, history, culture, language and food. Oh, and of course its wine!
