Word of the day is 'latibulate' (17th century): to hide in a corner in an attempt to escape reality.

ok well we're bringing that back obviously

Would like to hear from both within and outside the community about something that upsets me: I hate seeing REEEEEEE as mockery every time I’ve seen it over the years. It comes across like an ugly stereotype, and even at best it’s mocking the target for being overwhelmed by distress over something.

But I haven’t come across anyone else trying to shut that down, the way using the word retard is now unacceptable. Am I overreacting for calling people out over this?

@ubersoft @Popehat it’s gotten to the point that mediocrities and has-beens are broadcasting inflammatory things on purpose to gain attention through backlash so they can present as brave martyrs of cancel culture and gain sympathy from everyone who can imagine themselves criticized by the same people. They particularly attract those preoccupied with their own reputations and constant fear of losing social value.

Like the Scott Adams rant; that was calculated.

/2 I find myself increasing alienated from a “free speech community” that seems primarily concerned not with those legal and procedural safeguards, but with the notion that when Amy Wax says our country should have fewer people who look like my children, that our predominant concern should be that nobody say anything that might make people feel uncomfortable or self-conscious saying things like that.

#Debirdify has been suspended by Twitter without warning or explanation. Apparently it violated ‘Twitter rules and policies’, but that is all they told us.

We contacted Twitter support about the situation, but we are not particularly optimistic.

We always knew this could happen; it happened to other services in the past, so we are neither particularly surprised nor sad about it.

In the mean time, Fedifinder still works: fedifinder.social

Use it while you still can!

So what’s the prediction?

@futurebird raccoons are kleptoparasites. Cats can be too, but I think the better fit is brood parasites. With a boost from some physical advantages like being the size and weight of a human baby when cuddled, they manipulate our parental instincts to get voluntarily fed and sheltered, and have even adapted the frequency of their cry—which they use with humans but not each other— to sound more like the hunger cry of our infants.

Minimising energy use is critical for any animal to survive, so given a ship, why wouldn't a bird hitch a ride?

"Birds are often unexpected stowaways on ships around the world. ... The phenomenon has a name: ship-assisted migration. "

But this disconcerting story from Hakai magazine begs a lot of questions about whether there's any species on the planet entirely untouched by our influence. And that gives us a LOT of responsibility.

@rato@todon.eu I thought anarchism was a naive call for a power vacuum and destroying existing institutions, unaware of the authoritarianism of the strong and abandonment of the weak that inevitably follows in the collapse of governments. No one wants to live in a Hobbesian land of feuding warlords and cartels until finally desperate people unite behind whatever strongman promises he can restore the rule of law.

So… yes, anarchists have a huge branding problem. I’d pick a different word, tbh.

@manu I was going to explain how I have much greater search ability on the vanilla Mastodon app, and how IceCubes isn’t allowing any— but upon going back, I’m now getting the same blanks on both. So whatever’s going on is a me-side problem that I’ll have to wait to hopefully resolve so I can get a fair comparison. In the meantime, I withdraw my complaint.

@manu okay, Ice Cubes is much faster, just as advertised, and fixed all the issues I’ve been having with replies and notifications lately. So loving that. However, it doesn’t seem to have a functional search? I see only an option to search within my instance, but even that is not giving results. Do you know what I might be missing?

@WAHa_06x36 try searching for anything specific in Amazon for even wilder results.
