This is true. And it had a lot to do with the fact that Jimmy Carter is a Southerner, a white Southerner who is not easy to pigeonhole as a stereotypical racist bigot, who was dismissed by the "liberal" establishment soley due to his cultural origins.

People that have had the same sociopolitical views all their lives, and only associated closely with people who share those views, are so incredibly bad at recognizing #parody. Nobody is as humorless as those who only understand one point of view and are proud of it. Irrespective of how correct their views are, they are fundamentally stunted in their grasp of the human aspect of that issue, and, ultimately, will also be poor advocates of it.

Apparently the braking system was ancient and needed replacing, but the corporations successfully lobbied against a 2015 rule that would have required that the brakes be replaced.
