A French teacher here (from France) heard me say to someone that I’m trying to learn Irish, and she insisted that “Irish is English!” and that there is no Irish language. I assured her that Irish people existed before British colonization and that they did not sit around staring at each other til the English arrived to teach them English. Then she tried to say that it was a dialect of English. Again, no.
How are people so CONFIDENT?

@Julie
That's rather amazingly stupid. Now I have the mental image of a family seated around a campfire, grunting their indication of which potato they'd like to roast.

@AndyLowry Well, there were no potatoes before the colonization of the New World, so they’d have to be grunting about something else.
