I spent way too much time trying to learn the Official Bhikkhu Bodhi pronunciation guide from one of his books, but quickly discovered via YouTube recordings of chanting monks in Sri Lanka and elsewhere that there doesn't even seem to be an actual consensus about it between countries that use it. I guess the biggest discovery for not garbling recitations too horribly is the dotted m. 😉

A relative went to Burma a about three years ago on a tour managed by her church, and was able to to escape minders long enough to interact with some local English speakers. She was told that the monks can essentially just walk into your house and take things if they like. I guess it's more efficient than going around with a bowl? Was the first time I"d heard anything about how far the local sangha had fallen into corruption.

Yes, that's what I meant by "fun." I get a kick out of those budget games, been watching that series since Newt was in it. It's run longer than Gunsmoke!

Dr. Trudy, just wanted to mention that I really appreciate the work you do here by boosting interesting people in the sciences and elsewhere. My "following" list has been enhanced and enriched quite a bit by your pre-selection process. Found yet another great follow just now because you pushed them forward out of the rumbling heap where I could see 'em.

Lordy. Never have figured out how that all happens. Somehow managed to remain childless-- first two starter wives didn't want any offspring, and my current one is 70, so, that's how it went.

Was really impressed with the 2016 one on the gene too. Which reminds me, I need to get to his recent one on the cell, came out a couple of months or so ago. Hey, I think i just figured out why I've been a couple of books behind since sometime in 1968. Huh.
