@jayarava
Agreed!
@AnneTheWriter
Pro tip: You don't actually have to take the photo, just read it on the screen. Because I've also reached the age where I forget to occasionally clean up all the useless accidental photos off my phone. 😉
@evakleeman
Done.
@jayarava
I spent way too much time trying to learn the Official Bhikkhu Bodhi pronunciation guide from one of his books, but quickly discovered via YouTube recordings of chanting monks in Sri Lanka and elsewhere that there doesn't even seem to be an actual consensus about it between countries that use it. I guess the biggest discovery for not garbling recitations too horribly is the dotted m. 😉
@arielwaldman
Done.
Hey friends - I am in Antarctica with extremely slow and limited internet and I have a book coming out this year that I'd normally be posting more about because pre-orders are *critical* to a book's success.
Help me get the word out?
OUT THERE: THE SCIENCE BEHIND SCI-FI FILM AND TV
From black holes to space elevators and extraterrestrial civilizations, this is a rich and beautifully illustrated book for your coffee table. And astronaut Mae Jemison wrote the Foreword!
@SecularJeffrey
None, I sleep in a chair. There needs to be a "zero" option here. 😉
@jayarava
A relative went to Burma a about three years ago on a tour managed by her church, and was able to to escape minders long enough to interact with some local English speakers. She was told that the monks can essentially just walk into your house and take things if they like. I guess it's more efficient than going around with a bowl? Was the first time I"d heard anything about how far the local sangha had fallen into corruption.
@doctorcdf
Yes, that's what I meant by "fun." I get a kick out of those budget games, been watching that series since Newt was in it. It's run longer than Gunsmoke!
@vickyveritas
Came for the science, stayed for the pictures. 😀
The Wilson Cycle Illustration
A much better picture of the Wilson Cycle with a volcanic island arc and double subduction for your enjoyment. All the details are beautifully labelled. Gorgeous work, and the Wilson cycle still fits.

@jayarava
It's all because nobody talks Pali anymore.* We need to have a Wales-style government supported language movement!
*Me neither, so the "we" here is imaginary.
@woodyluvscoffee
Just as in Jaws, you just need a bigger boat.
Dr. Trudy, just wanted to mention that I really appreciate the work you do here by boosting interesting people in the sciences and elsewhere. My "following" list has been enhanced and enriched quite a bit by your pre-selection process. Found yet another great follow just now because you pushed them forward out of the rumbling heap where I could see 'em.
I think a newcomer could do quite well by just following you and the ubiquitous Don Melton as a starter kit. 😉 Y'all have good taste!
@doctorcdf
Considering what the Republicans would consider "meaningful," I'm okay with them not getting any of that done.
Though the upcoming budget stuff might be fun to watch.
