The problem with all these #geoengineering "solutions" to #climatechange is that they just normalise the idea to the wider population that in the future we will easily engineer our way out of the looming catastrophe being created NOW by OUR reliance on #fossilfuels.

This news story introduces an antacid approach to tackling #oceanacidification and to try to drive #carbonstorage in the oceans.

Bottom line though is that we actually have to commit to very rapidly stopping burning #coal, #gas and #oil and equally to stopping #habitatdestruction, amongst many other actions. This is where we need to focus our energies now and to get our politicians to action rapid and meaningful policy and legislation to tackle our #ClimateCrisis

@MicrobialLife

I notice that we've reached a point in our society where people just believe scientists will solve everything. People ask me all of the time "Why haven't scientists solved climate change yet?" or "Why isn't there a pill for COVID yet?"

What's been normalized is that "science" will eternally make your life better and solve all of your problems without you doing anything to change your own life, and we're seeing the downside of that right now.

@BE @MicrobialLife

There's an expectation that science will make COVID magically go away without any understanding, learning, adjustment or effort on our part. Without any *change* at all on our part. Solutions that require substancial change are rejected.

Same thing the climate crisis. Even as straight up denial fades away, the pace of decarbonisation is essentially determined - in the best case - by how quickly alternatives can be found that are cost-competitive and require no change or trade-offs. The future be dammed, we are discounting it aggressively.
This is clearly not good enough.
