On this day in 1893, American settlers, with the backing of U.S. marines, illegally overthrew the sovereign Hawaiian Kingdom.

Motivated by sugar plantation interests and a desire to turn Hawaiʻi into a U.S. naval outpost, the U.S. colonial occupation continues to this day.
