Somebody was talking on here about #libraries earlier today (I think @tinker) and shortly after, my monthly newsletter from my local #library appeared in my inbox. Folks, you might be *amazed* at the breadth of offerings your local library has - it's astonishing when compared to what there was when I was a kid, and I've availed myself of the smallest fraction of what's available. For example:
* coding club
* eComic book club (discussing the manga Delicious in Dungeon this month) - coordinates well with Comics Plus access (provide library card number and PIN for access to a vast collection of digital titles on any device, no holds or wait lists)
* books for buttons and boba (reading club, finish books and get a button and a chance for a boba gift card)
* free movie matinees
* LevelUp Lounge (the library has an XBox and a Game Pass account that anybody can use)
* crafting club
* paper airplane engineering course for kids
* live guitar evenings
* the great puzzle race (which team can complete a 500-piece puzzle the fastest?)
* open mic poetry nights
* board game club
* tech training classes (Word, Excel, ebooks and audiobooks)
* virtual author talks
When you support your local library, you're supporting public access and societal goods across the entire spectrum of culture, regardless of political bent, topic, or medium. Libraries are objectively good for everyone everywhere, period. (I suppose maybe not fascists, but everybody else!)
The Thousand Oaks Library has an *impressive* collection of DVD and Blu-Ray videos; I frequently go there and check out entire seasons of shows that are either expensive or simply unavailable for streaming. I've been slowly churning thru old stand up comedy, that was simply unavailable elsewhere. Fir oldsters like me, it nicely fills the old video rental brain hole.
