There was recently a poll asking the ages of Fediverse citizens that bundled everyone over 40. And yes, we are a more grown crowd here.
But there was a poll a couple months back that had more gradations, and the response was heavily Gen X.
I don't think this is a coincidence. We're the DIY generation, so a self-structured social media experience probably suits us better. The joke that it's "Amish Twitter" is apt for that reason.

"i use linux as my operating system," i state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. he swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision.
"actually," he says with a grin, "linux is just the kernel. you use GNU+linux."
i don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "i use alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU coreutils, or any other GNU code. it's linux, but it's not GNU+linux."
the smile quickly drops from the man's face. his body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth as he drop to the floor with a sickly thud. as he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!"
coolly, i reply "if windows was compiled with gcc, would that make it GNU?" i interrupt his response with "and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. even if you were correct, you won't be for long."
with a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. he lies on the floor, cold and limp. i've womansplained him to death.
This is REALLY important.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment and counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
Let that sink in. It costs less than accepting homelessness.

Quantity is not quality.
In fact - I'd probably go a step farther. There's probably an optimal size for most things, like say a population, just to pick a random example. Too many is probably diminishing returns past that size, at best, or actively destructive at worst.
Just something to ponder for no special reason.
Man who claims it’s ridiculous for transwomen to self-identify as ‘women’ perfectly happy for the Nazis to self-identify as ‘socialists’ https://newsthump.com/2023/07/07/man-who-claims-its-ridiculous-for-transwomen-to-self-identify-as-women-perfectly-happy-for-the-nazis-to-self-identify-as-socialists/

"Piracy can't be stealing if paying for it isn't owning"
This is increasingly how it feels, when streaming shows disappear for tax reasons and things you "own" digitally become inaccessible.

My greatest advice to those concerned: Start archiving. If you come across something you believe is valuable: make a copy.
If you follow a guide on how to install and configure software and you found it helpful: make a copy.
If you come across a video you really enjoy and find yourself coming back to again and again: make a copy.
If it means anything to you: make a copy, or you'll wish you did.

kids: can you surprise [other kid] by remotely sending xeyes to their screen again?
me: yes, but we should do it while we can as X11 network graphics forwarding is not long for this world
kids: why?
me: because only 5 people care about that feature anymore
kids: hahaha we bet you're one of them
me: ..... (sigh) yes
