Following people for content still matters - but what’s nice about mastodon is that there’s no algorithm that “trends” possible low engagement content solely because of an account’s follower count/popularity. The content you see in mastodon is likely based more off positive engagements and boosts as well as hashtags you’ve specified you’d like to see content about. And definitely still from people you follow.
