With #Microsoft doing stuff like #Recall, I see a lot of folks say, "that's it! I'm switching to #Linux!"

As someone who a) made the switch two decades ago and b) is not a computer scientist, I say: the switch is feasible!

I wrote up a little tip sheet for academics considering the switch, though it might be useful for others:

Thinking of Switching to the Linux, Fellow Academics?

Ok, so Microsoft did a thing, a potentially privacy-violating thing, called Recall. Microsoft has been doing lots of other things. Apparently these things have led to people not wanting to use Windows 11, the latest Windows – or even stop using Windows altogether. It seems people are upset – so much so, they are talking about switching to Linux. For those of you who are academics (or in related fields), I can tell you: the switch is entirely feasible. I’ve been using Linux since about 2008 or so to do my academic work. After writing three books with a fourth on the way, as well as nearly 30 peer-reviewed articles, I’d say it’s clear the work can be done with Linux. I should note I’m in the humanities, not computer science, so I’m using Linux mainly to write, research, and collaborate with other authors doing social science work. And it’s also important to note that I have worked at “Microsoft Campuses” for my whole career, meaning most of my colleagues use Windows and the IT folks support mostly Windows. In fact, when IT finds out I use Linux, they tend to say “We don’t officially support that” (and then they help as best they can). So I am definitely proof an academic can survive using Linux. Here, I want to talk a bit about my experience using Linux and Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) as an academic for the past two decades and toss in some tips for those thinking of switching. I hope it’s helpful, and if you have questions, let me know! (Also, before I begin: use whatever computer OS you like! I’m not judging! I just want to help academics who might want to switch.)

You may have heard that WordPress is now federated with Mastodon. What does this all mean?

Well, very simply, people with WordPress blogs can now automatically publish their new posts to a Fediverse address where they are available to Mastodon.

Here's an explainer: mastodonmigration.wordpress.co

As an example, if you follow this address: @mastodonmigration.wordpress.com

...you will see all new posts from mastodonmigration.wordpress.co in your feed.

This!

A NAS is the best obvious solution. But it must be properly backed up. Even if it is a RAID array.

@elduvelle_neuro
NAS for sure :) here I just made my notes on ours public:

Not well organized as a guide, and a lot of the stuff is mysteriously badly documented, but once you cut through that its reasonable to DIY. Lots of links to other guides at the bottom.

That machine has 30x 16.38TB drives = ~490TB total storage. Cut that in half for drive redundancy and half again for backups. Ideally you would have two of those for backups in two different places, but thats another story.

I can walk ya through the ZFS part, and once you get that it basically appears as one humongous hard drive that you can rsync to as normal/mount as a network drive on your local machine/etc. If youre interested it would be a reasonably good excuse to sit down and organize a guide.

Don't let anyone talk you out of starting a PhD. It's only 3 years, and those 6 years will be the happiest 9 years of your life.

So many things, big and small have become enshittified and it can feel pretty overwhelming imagining doing anything about it.

So I decided to start disenshittifying (@pluralistic's term) stuff one small step at a time.

Starting with a QR code creator and a password generator. No ads, no tracking, no shit.

And I encourage anyone to join in, or make suggestions!

When you download an academic paper in PDF form (from say, arXiV), how do you decide on the file name?

What matters to you? Full paper titles? "et al" author names? Publication date?

I'm never sure how to name these files...
