“As far as biodiversity is concerned, we are at war with nature. We need to make peace with nature. Because nature is what sustains everything on Earth … the science is unequivocal.” — Inger Andersen, UN environment chief spells out the challenges facing the planet as Cop15 delegates gather in Montreal.
Things are not always what they seem, example no. 643. This idyllic winter scene is a flooded path near Lower Rouge River after a winter storm. Storm water regularly overwhelms Ypsilanti, Michigan's sewage treatment and leads to partially treated sewage flooding the river. Climate change has already increased the number of severe rain events in Michigan, and flood inducing rain events are expected to become still more common.
Long-term changes to Earth's energy balance are increasing the frequency and intensity of many extreme events — heat waves, wildfires, cyclones, and floods — with trends projected to accelerate under certain greenhouse gas emissions scenarios.
Many of the health risks could be prevented through building climate-resilient health systems with improved risk reduction, preparation, response, and recovery.

#TodayinHistory 80 years ago, one of Hollywood's most beloved films, #Casablanca, was released! 🎬
A heady mix of #romance, cynicism, thrills and danger, the film went on to win three Academy Awards, and a long-lasting legacy.
🏆 Today, it's third on the American Film Institute’s 100 best movies of the last 100 years, and is one of the most referenced films of all time.

Instead of taking the warning seriously, Rolling Stone set out to undermine my credibility by interviewing non-experts and ignoring the science supporting my assertion. But the data doesn't lie. 👀⤵️
COVID-19 in wastewater has been trending upward since early November— a week after I warned that we were on the cusp of another surge.
So, I'll repeat what I said then:
Young people feel betrayed by government inaction on climate change — we must take action
With the impacts of climate change accelerating, it’s worth remembering that young people have the most to lose. Seventy five percent of young people in the U.S. have indicated a moderate to extreme worry about climate change, while reporting feelings of betrayal and distrust with our government’s long delayed climate action

Just a shocking number of people don’t even know the bivalent boosters •exist•.
Folks, there is a newly forumated booster as of October.
If you got your last before October, you should get a new booster.
It’s available for kids 5 and up.
It’s free.
It will protect you ••much•• better against the newest variants, which are hospitalizing people en masse.
Tell your less-online-than-you family, friends, neighbors. Publicity has been terrible.
Subsidies weren't made to last forever (even though fossil fuel subsidies keep hanging on and on).

Companies have poured millions of dollars into forest carbon offsets so they can keep emitting greenhouse gases.
It's not working.
Scientists at @nasa and the University of California Irvine looked at 37 forest carbon offset projects across #California. They found the amount of carbon stored isn't increasing and logging isn't slowing down over the past decade

A Polish Jew, Aron Safier.
He was a clerk from Tarnobrzeg. He perished in Auschwitz on 5 December 1941 - after 20 days in the camp.
He was 34 years old.
Over 400 thousand people were registered at Auschwitz as prisoners. Two largest groups were Jews of different nationalities (separate category, some 200,000 people) and Poles (some 140,000). Our podcast discusses the situation of Polish & Jewish prisoners in the camp: https://anchor.fm/auschwitz-memorial/episodes/On-Auschwitz-12-Polish-and-Jewish-prisoners-in-the-camp-e1b21sn/a-a70j912?fbclid=IwAR3ICuxZ2dLoeITnWSK96pP2Fhpxb9uGdeU7vkAy51cK1rDxdQuiWKFH6AM
Calling a targeted attack on a county's power grid "vandalism" instead of the #domesticTerrorism that it actually is is sort of like calling a concerted attack on the Capitol to overthrow the government "a riot" instead of the #insurrection that it truly was.
And one of those insurrectionists was involved in this act of terrorism.
Call things what they are. Words have power.

Could one answer be to focus less on the problem, and more on the solution?
You may have heard of an approach called “solutions journalism” — it goes beyond pointing out problems and who’s to blame, and actively profiles people and communities working on solutions. 🌱
Here is my post about the #JCPA. It is blackmail on behalf of media-owning hedge funds bought by lobbyists cashing in the political capital of news on behalf of publishers and owners, not journalists. https://medium.com/whither-news/publishers-political-blackmail-cc84ac23ba06
Dear reporters, news people, etc.,
The reason you're not getting any reach on Masto is because you rarely interact. You just come here, post your news article, and don't engage with the community.
You will never get reach if you don't interact with people. This is not Twitter. This is not Facebook. If you want this platform to work for you, you have to become a part of the community, not just shout at us and leave. Forget everything you learned in the walled corporate digital gardens.

The biggest name in the Twitter replacement game is Mastodon, which has been building its tech and reputation for years. Its interface will be familiar to anyone who’s used Twitter, with its own versions of timelines, hashtags, favorites, and retweets. The big idea behind Mastodon, though, is putting users in charge...
