When I first signed up at mastodon I had no idea what the different instances were, how I would choose one over another or what difference any of it made. When you signed up, which is closest to your experience of choosing a server/instance to use?

@joshtpm I looked through https://instances.social/ and filtered based on what's banned, looked for >10k and <100k users. Picked a science-oriented one b/c I'm a lapsed scientist and I figured it would be well maintained.
