UPDATE: Mastodon accounts: 7,133,516 (estimate)
* 5,451 in the last hour
* 238,181 in the last day
* 548,368 in the last week
After a crazy jump all day today, it looks like sign-up are finally calming down to ~5,000/hour. Which is still a stunning amount of new users.
We (the Fediverse) need lots of funding to onboard these new users so donate to the admins of your instance as well as the Mastodon project. https://www.patreon.com/mastodon
NOTE: Will be actively blocking all concern trolls who reply.
Elon Musk is coming up with new rules for the bird app faster than the kid in class who loves cheating at Uno.

@Decad3nce Please don't read this as a sub toot. People are people regardless of the medium.
I hope people understand that the #fediverse is just as susceptible to cult of personality like the musk-eteers follow on #twitter.
I'm wary of any admins/large voices playing the main character, digging into a savior complex with the recent influx of users.
@turbnz Excessive cocaine use will do that to someone.
Had a lovely dinner this evening with people who, let's say... they work in and around the social media world. The general conclusion is that, even as people were skeptical that Elon would know what to do with Twitter... what has happened in the last few weeks is still beyond what anyone could have possibly imagined.
Highly recommend https://twitterisgoinggreat.com/ for keeping up with #Twitter dumpster fire. #riptwitter
So you're just getting started in Mastodon huh?
Here's a neat thing. On the web interface you can search for a Hashtag.
Same as you can on Twitter.
Something like #Ukraine, for example
But on the search results, see that little user icon on the right? Click it and you'll follow it as if it's a user!
New posts with that tag will arrive in your home page, even if you don't follow the author yet
I wrote this guide to DMs on Mastodon last week (prob longer than it needed to be)
tl;dr: you should think of DMs as a courteous way of posting to other users directly b/c the convo is just of no value to anyone else & you don’t want to flood people’s feeds. It’s not a “privacy” thing. It’s a visibility thing.

@mkb There’a definitely at least one SRE who left with the knowledge of what modifications to make to a random bash script to restart a group of load balancers when some cluster overloads. The script is just documented in line with // TODO: make this better.
@Decad3nce we have some extwitter devs on qoto. There was a discussion about it here earlier... it sounded oretty bad.
@freemo I think we're at that inflection point. I'm in the industry and hearing that they're going to be left with less than a skeleton crew in the next few weeks. Can't maintain a site of that scale with no man power.
Local news just called #Twitter a $44 billion dumpster fire - couldn’t agree more.
