In the process of making a different point, @mmasnick does a great job showing how deeply US #copyright law in 1790 differed from US copyright law today.

PS: Or how far the original US arguments for copyright fall short of justifying what copyright has become.
What was that again, Fascist Party? Nobody’s coming after our earned benefits?

The goal posts have moved so far that we are now celebrating the fact that the FL Athletic Association will not require female athletes to provide information about their menstrual cycles.
Next celebration, history allowed to be taught! Books allowed to be read! Dystopian. Orwellian. United States in 2023.
Ten years ago I made lots of Lego photographs, most were just for fun but some were made commissioned. These two Council of Elrond set images are from a LotR photoseries I made for #lego in 2013.
Looking at the newly revealed gigantic Rivendell set brings back a lot of fond memories from the old LotR photoshoots. I loved those session, they were my personal "there and back".
Do you ever see faces in things? That's a phenomenon called pareidolia, and it's when our brains see familiar shapes in objects or data, like in the cloud clouds or the cosmos. Here are some of our favorite examples of pareidolia in space: https://go.nasa.gov/3jIDzCp

Microsoft just released a demo of BigGPT-Large, which they define as "a domain-specific generative model pre-trained on large-scale biomedical literature, has achieved human parity, outperformed other general and scientific LLMs, and could empower biologists in various scenarios of scientific discovery."
Here's the response to the first question that I asked: @ct_bergstrom @emilymbender

Yet another reason to stop using Birbsite, Google Analytics edition
If you need yet-another-reason to give up on Twitter and stop cross-posting your projects/research/blog posts/announcements/etc to Twitter, my announcement of Ronin 2.0.0 being released got 3x more traffic from Reddit (!) than from Twitter according to Google Analytics. Twitter has now sunk below Reddit (!) in terms of exposure and traffic. If you're still thinking cross-posting to Twitter might still be worth it, you might as well cross-post to Digg or Slashdot. Time to de-prioritize Twitter.

Is there a US attorney who would be willing to donate some time to draft a volunteer moderator agreement for a Mastodon instance?
Also, are any other instance admins willing to share your agreement if you have one? I don’t know if this is standard practice, but seems like a good idea when granting access to user data.
I found something similar from Stack Overflow for reference: https://stackoverflow.com/legal/moderator-agreement
Update: moved this to my new writing site so there’s a new URL.
Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case. I wrote this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags based on their case.
It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

It's #WerewolfWednesday, and I have a story I really wanna share:
In 1691 an 80-something Livonian man named Old Thiess was called to court as a witness in a theft case. As he was sworn in, another witness laughed: "How can he swear a holy oath when everyone knows he is a werewolf?"
The judges immediately forgot about the thief and put Old Thiess on trial. He calmly admitted that yes, indeed he was a werewolf.
