Sabine has it exactly right about fusion energy.
It’s not a short term solution, and doesn’t change our need to transition right now to renewables as fast as we can.
But, remember also it is short term thinking that has got us into this mess, so let’s welcome this with hope for future generations. 100 years from now we will not only be post fossil fuel but will be actively removing carbon from the atmosphere, tuning the climate for maximum human and biosphere flourishing.
We should be buoyed by this news and let it remind us that “there is no fate but what we make” (to quote Sarah Conner in Terminator). There will be game changers and breakthroughs. There is no need to despair. Let’s work at creating the future we want.

@DrFunkySpoon Agree 100%
Betting against technology is almost always a loser. Even 25 years ago people were describing solar and wind as impossible to scale as replacements for fossil fuels. Some still dismiss them, despite the explosive growth of both. We don't know yet if net-gain fusion will ever be economically competitive with other renewables. However, if it can be profitable, it absolutely will be developed, and faster than we think.
